I am rarely starstruck or into being a "fan" as it were. But as the sun was setting and we were almost to our hotel and I saw signs for Deadwood, I decided I would relent and give in to my inner-geek. Deadwood had been one of my favorite shows while it was on.

August 21 at 6:22pm · Deadwood, SD · Hitting a bunch of tourist spots
In keeping with the theme of the day, we rolled into "Historic Deadwood" which was about as far from what Deadwood historically was and closer to Disneyland or Vegas. But with enough imagination and taking in the hillsides and rough terrain which remained true to its roots you could see the old western rough and tumble town of yesteryear.
We had dinner at a very touristy Saloon, which was pretty much one of dozen along the street and then wandered around several gift shops where I picked up a Trump bobble head and some other trinkets.
We left as the sun disappeared over the mountains and we said good-bye to South Dakota and hello Wyoming.
Wyoming is a big state with almost no one in it, just my kind of place. In fact, it's the least populous state in the country which is remarkable. With that in mind they may just have the most taxidermy per capita.

Getting a couple of Bison burgers in Buffalo, Wyoming.
Yellowstone Is on Fire
We mad our way though Wyoming, getting within striking distance of Yellowstone. As we got closer to Cody, the skies became hazier. At first I thought it was cloud coverage, however the smell of smoke soon clued me into what was going on.
We got out of the car and were greeted with a light dusting of ash. As it turned out, there were four wild-fires in Yellowstone, one which was threatening the West Gate which would have completely changed my travel plans.
Part of the Burning Man dilemma has always been where Skye will be while I'm there, seeing as Cindy has always been working at the time. One year she stayed with my Mom, another my Mom stayed with us, this year she would be going on Wolf and Elk Discovery Adventure at Yellowstone. Staying on her own in a cabin and then going out with a guided group in search of wolves, bears, bisons and more.
I was tempted to stay myself and forget about that crazy ordeal in the desert.
Entering Yellowstone is always a magical event. It is one of the most places I've ever been too. And once again, I couldn't believe I had to race through it, only stopping to get gas and drop Skye off.
Skye's New Digs
We pulled up to the beautiful Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. As Skye checked in, I dug out her bags, only to be putting them back as I found out that she wasn't staying in the hotel proper but one of the cabins that made up it's own little community out back.

August 23 at 1:39pm · Island Park, ID · Dropped Skye off in Yellowstone, 7 hrs more to drive today but am sitting in Idaho waiting on road construction; ugh
I had been making great time. This was going to be one of the hardest days of the journey as far as hours spent driving. I literally had to sit in my car for an hour waiting on road construction. I couldn't even get out to stretch my legs. Oh well; patience.......
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Idaho, a truck past me by giving me the hang-loose sign and looking they could quite possibly be "burners" . I would run into them hours later at a gas station on the Nevada-Idaho border and they were indeed going to the event and were staying out at the airport and actually knew one of my friends who was also at the airport. Crazy small world; also crazy that Burning Man has it's own airport.

2500 miles, 14 states and I'm back in my home state and almost there...or at least to Elko
Pulling into these Nevada towns that have a Main Street of casinos has always been strange for me. I remember when Las Vegas was a lot smaller and Old Town Down was around as long and unspectacular as places like Elko. But that's all changed of course.
It was late when I got in and I'd been driving all day, skipping lunch to make up for the road-construction delay. I knew better than to stay out and play in the casino or see what other trouble I could stir up. Tomorrow and the next few weeks were going to be an exhausting affair, so time to rest up

Starting to see more "Burners" on the road; last sighting hails from Quebec; that's a nice long drive
It was only a few hours from Elko to Reno, my easiest drive of the trip thus far. I had lunch with a fellow burner from Atlanta and then...well that's another story.
