When I signed us up for the End of the World 5K, it was going to be a family event. We were all going to train for it and then be together for the end of the world.
Then reality decided to step in.
Cindy had to take a job in LA, so wouldn't be joining us. However, Skye and I were still going to do it and train together. So we started running together, a first. We would start off at the same pace and when we got to nearby Grant Park we'd part ways and meet up after around half an hour.
Will the World End with an Ice Age
I know globally we're in a warming cycle. That said maybe it's going to be a quick one and then plunge into another ice age.
At least that's how it felt for our little 5K.
I definitely didn't dress for it and paid for it. But I've run in temps that dipped well below 0F. But little Skye, well it was pretty eye-opening for her. Perhaps not the best 1st 5K, at least weather wise.
No Medal, But Great Shirt
My fingers thawed just about when we finished the race. We stayed just long enough at the after party to get some water and a chicken and biscuit from the Chik Fil A booth (I am opposed to their politics and don't normally patronize their establishment, but I was hungry and it was free, so didn't feel like cutting off my nose to spite my face on this occasion)
They didn't hand out any medals which I'm fine with, I have plenty, but it would have been nice for Skye. But the T-shirt is really nice, a fun logo and great weight and feel, so I think it's a good trade off.
I wore the Go-Pro and took several clips but it doesn't fare well at night.
We actually did a bunch of research on the Mayans, their calender and their love and worship of chocolate.
Seriously, I've been reading a fascinating book I picked up in Santa Fe, Chocolate, Pathway to the Gods, I grabbed it because of my love of chocolate, cooking and history, with no thoughts about this silly Mayan end-of-the-world thing but it seemed fitting to jump into it given the context.
I dropped Skye off back at the house and then went to pick up Cindy.
We'll be celebrating the holidays in Atlanta and then head out west to regroup and then...
