After several months off, I've started running again.
Getting back into it is hard.
It gets harder each time I take some time off.
Of course, that I took so much time off is really the biggest issue here.
Regardless, I'm back to pretending I'm a runner again.
As you may or may not recall, my last "race" or rather organized event was the Burning Man 50K
I ran that in my Vibram 5 Fingers and I plan to run the upcoming Georgia Marathon "bare-foot" or more correctly, in minimalist shoes as well.
However, given the very short time to train that I have, and given how long it takes to get my bare-feet back, I have come up with a rather creative solution.
Hoka-One-One AKA Clown Shoes
I had read about the Hoka in a fitness magazine.
Basically they are the polar opposites to minimalist shoes,
maximum cushioning running shoes. They are wider, thicker, and softer than typical running shoes—two and a half times beefier and 30 percent cushier, a sole with 29 millimeters of cushioning, a 19-millimeter boost over traditional shoes, without any added weight.
So the game plan is to slowly get my barefoot conditioning in, while running in Vibrams, and still be able to put in significant mileage in while running in the super comfy Hokas.
Who knows maybe I'll end up running the marathon in my "clown shoes".
Signing Up For Inspiration
Sometimes in order to motivate myself, I need a very specific goal. Very often preparing for a race works to get me going.
So with that in mind, I just registered for a few races.
The big one being the Georgia Marathon.
I'm a couple of months behind in my training, so I better get serious.
I also signed up for the Bad Ass Dash, one of the only obstacle course races I haven't already done. Plus a friend from circus school is doing it as well.
And last, but certainly not least, I signed the entire family up for the Bacon Chase 5K.
Because, all you can eat bacon the day before a marathon is a great idea, right?
Join the Parade
I would love to have some company on these exploits, especially the marathon, and might be tempted to run in other events, perhaps the upcoming Spartan Sprint or the Warrior Dash.
I'm game and looking for a challenge as well as friends to do them with.
