None of us were quite ready to go on this trip. We all wanted to. We all were excited to go, but for a variety of reasons, none of us were prepared to go.
I was the most guilty of this. In fact, I had barely begun to pack by the end of Monday and we were planning on leaving relatively early Tuesday morning, as we had over six hours of driving to do.
The next morning, I woke up around 5 continued getting ready for the trip.
I had planned on going for a run which was a far-fetched dream from the outset, regardless of how good-intentioned or needed.
We finally hit the road a little after 11, just a few hours later than intended.
What Are We doing in Alabama? and Where is the Sun in the Sunshine State?
We had printed out the route MapQuest had suggested and we had entered the destination in our GPS and Iphone. However we didn't have a very detailed road map of the area, so when we went slightly of course, trying to figure out where we actually were with our virtual helpers was a bit challenging.
Everything worked out fine, we just ended up driving through southeast Alabama instead of southwest.
As to Florida's usual sunny disposition, well it was cloudy and rainy all day. But then again it was the Panhandle.
Apalachicola is all about its oysters and shrimp, fortunately not affected by the BP oil spill, and the little known trivia tidbit of being home to the modern day ice machine.
The Coombs House Inn is a lovely bed & breakfast which consists of several Victorian mansions. I usually am not fond of Victorian sensibilities but these were done tastefully without too much fuss.
One of the extras they offer is a bottle of chilled champagne, waiting for you in your room on arrival.
Cheers to a safe arrival at our first destination.
When I stepped up to the counter to order, Cindy told me I was ordering way too much.
It wasn't too long till we were back at the counter to put in a second order.
We went through lots of oysters, prepared in several different ways, mussels, as well as trying alligator for the first time.
And no, it doesn't taste like chicken.
We did try to balance this with an order of broccoli.
But I suppose that was canceled out by the Coconut cream pie.
Not for long, we're in Florida.
